Chloroplast Division in the Gametophyte of the Fern Matteuccia Struthiopteris (l.) Todaro

چکیده
The mechanism by which fully developed chloroplasts divide has been reported to consist of an initial constriction around the entire chloroplast, which is followed by a p inching into two daugh te r chloroplasts. Constr ict ion is accompanied by fusion of the inner and outer layers of the chloroplast membrane . Such a division has been documented by electron microscopy for the brown alga, Fucus (yon Wettstein, 1), and the red alga, Lomentaria (Bouck, 2). In Fucus the axis of division is usually parallel to the longitudinal axis of the chloroplast lamellae. Light microscopic observations of ma tu re chloroplasts dividing by constriction have been made in land plants ranging from bryophytes th rough the angiosperms (3, 4). Division of proplastids in higher plants (5) is similar to the condi t ion reported for algal chloroplasts, in tha t p inching also is accompanied by fusion of all the layers of the chloroplast membrane . A second method of mature chloroplast division is described in this paper. The ma tu re chloroplast is divided by the centr ipetal invaginat ion of the innerl imit ing membrane . This method of chloroplast division is here termed concentral ization. M A T E R I A L S A N D M E T H O D S

Differential Response in the Water Status of Immature and Mature Fronds of the Ostrich Fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris [L.] Todaro) to a Mild Water Stress.
Experiments were conducted in growth chambers to examine the effect of a mild water stress (-200 kilopascals polyethylene glycol) on frond elongation and water status of the ostrich fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris [L.] Todaro). Measurements were taken for two days, starting one day after the application of polyethylene glycol. Total water potential in control (well-watered) plants was always si...
متن کاملBiochemistry of fern spore germination: protease activity in ostrich fern spores.
Protease activities were detected in quiescent and germinating spores of the ostrich fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris [L.] Todaro). Peak endopeptidase, aminopeptidase, and carboxypeptidase activities were detected 12 to 24 hours after spores began imbibing under light. There was a correlation between activities of proteases, the onset of a decline in levels of soluble protein, and an increase in...
متن کاملFern rhizomes as fodder in Norway
BACKGROUND Although ferns are often known under collective names in Norway, e.g. blom, a substantial number of vernacular names for individual fern species are known, in particular for useful or poisonous taxa. In the past, the rhizomes (Norwegian: moldfôr) of selected species were collected for fodder. Only scattered records of such use are available from southern Norway, and the tradition's c...
متن کاملCytological Features of the Egg Cell Protoplasts Isolated from Gametophytes of Fern, Struthiopteris niponica (Kunze) Nakai
Egg cell protoplasts were isolated from the gametophyte of the fern, Struthiopteris niponica (Kunze) Nakai. Archegonia were excised from the prothallia and then digested in an enzyme solution that contained Cellulase "Onozuka" RS and Macerozyme R-10. After 3 hours of incubation, the egg cell protoplasts had separated completely from the somatic cells. The protoplasts had such cytological featur...
متن کاملBiologic effects of plant toxins and aflatoxins in rats.
After weaning, groups of rats were fed a semi-purified diet containing fiddlehead greens (the unfuried frond of the ostrich fern Matteuccia struthiopteris), mature bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum), or cycad meal (Cycas circinalis), or this diet plus aflatoxin B1. The groups fed 1-10% fiddlehead greens for 70-73 weeks developed no tumors, whereas those fed mature bracken fern for 67 weeks deve...
